What is AZA SAFE?

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of zoos and aquariums in the areas of conservation, education, science, and recreation. AZA represents more than 230 facilities, all of which meet the highest standards in animal care and welfare. Every five years, each facility goes through the accreditation process to ensure these high standards are maintained. One of AZA's core initiatives is the Saving Animals from Extinction (SAFE) program which focuses the collective expertise within the AZA community and leverages their massive audiences to save species.

Why Sea Turtles?

Sea turtles are marine reptiles that have inhabited the Earth’s seas for more than 110 million years. They have out-lived countless species, including the dinosaurs. Despite their incredible evolutionary success, sea turtles face a variety of threats to survival, many of which are cause by humans. We can address these threats by taking action to conserve sea turtles, and help other species in the process.

Our Mission

Using the collective resources of the AZA community, the Sea Turtle SAFE Program is in a unique position to bolster the conservation of two of the most endangered sea turtle species, the Kemp's ridley and Eastern Pacific leatherback in their range countries, while promoting and furthering the significant work being done within AZA institutions.
